Oi! Read These! 🐸 🐶 🐱

I always do a little inner cheer when N° 1 selects either of the Oi! books to be read to her (Oi Frog! is the first one in this series and Oi Dog! is the sequel). The appeal (for both of us) is obvious, really. First of all, the bright and colourful illustrations (by Jim Field) are simply amazing- innovative, funny and clever which is just the perfect combo. Secondly, both books are great to read out loud– the rhymes are spot-on, they have just the right amount of repetition and one gets to do the voices (my interpretation of Cat is a sophisticated, imperious Frenchman).

The story/narrative itself is simple but not without a twist! In the first book Frog learns from Cat that every animal has their own place to sit. However, whilst Cat sitting on a mat is rather comfortable, Frog does not want to sit on a log (it gives him splinters in the bottom, you see). And I won’t even mention Dog…

In Oi Dog! the rebellious Frog changes the rules and in a radical and somewhat vengeful move relocates cats from mats onto gnats. And as to Frog himself? You will need to find out yourself and if you have at least one funny bone in your body I swear you will  have some serious giggles.

And the best thing? A little birdie promised me that Oi Cat! is coming out this September! So watch this space as the rules might change once again…
